Blackout Coffee was never built in a boardroom.
It was built through sacrifice, resilience, and an obsession with creating something better.
Founder John Santos was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts in August 1981 after his parents legally immigrated from Portugal in search of opportunity and a better future for their family. When he was three and a half years old, the family moved back to Portugal, where he spent most of his childhood.
In the spring of 2000, just before turning 19 years old, John returned to America alone with only $1,000 he had saved.
Over the next two decades, John built businesses across multiple industries, learning hard lessons through both success and failure.
The mortgage collapse forced a complete reset and eventually brought the family to Florida, where the foundation for Blackout Coffee would eventually begin.
But through every challenge, one thing remained constant: the drive to build something meaningful.
In September 2018, John and Rachael started Blackout Coffee from their home garage with a simple mission:
Create bold, fresh coffee without compromise.
What began as a small family operation has grown into one of America’s fastest-growing coffee brands, with more than 1,000,000 orders shipped to over 350,000 customers nationwide.
