It's the Most Peppermint Time of the Year
Seasonal coffee drink flavors were brought out last week at the specialty coffee shops as a sure sign the holiday season is upon us. Flavors such as Peppermint Mocha, Gingerbread and Eggnog Lattes are now up on the chalkboard menu. The drinks have caught on, as, for example, last year such drinks brought in 30% more to Starbucks than the year before.
Consumer pressure on coffee shops brings results, as several now offer a low-calorie option. There has been a lot of chatter about the high calorie count in these special specialty coffee drinks, filled with the likes of whipped cream and massive amounts of sugar. So it’s good to see the shops respond, one with a tall latte having only 100 calories.
One hundred calories for coffee? Is it just me, or did many other coffee drinkers take up the brew because it had zero calories? Oh sure, we added a pack of sugar for 16 calories, and maybe a little cream, but never 100 calories of sweetener. And then there were the nonfat lattes, the soy milk lattes, even the 2% lattes in some shops. How far we’ve come.
The article in Bloomberg’s Businessweek went beyond mentioning the big three – Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts and Caribou. Even a little known café called Jittery Abe's, situated aboard the naval carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, has gotten in the act and will serve the Starbucks holiday flavors while parked off the Pakistan coast. The Navy sure isn’t what it used to be.
The good news for ROASTe customers is that you don’t have to go to a neighborhood coffee shop to have a yummy decadent holiday coffee dressed up in tinsel and peppermint, nor do you have to join the Navy. Check out the choices below, or just go for the syrup and make every drink a flavorful one, be it peppermint, gingerbread, pumpkin or any of our many options.
