How to Brew AeroPress Coffee: Step-by-Step Guide

Learning how to brew AeroPress coffee takes less than 2 minutes once you know the steps. The AeroPress is one of the most forgiving brewers you can own. This guide covers the standard method from grind to cup.

What Is an AeroPress?

An AeroPress is a compact manual coffee brewer that uses air pressure to push water through grounds. The result is a clean, concentrated cup with low acidity and no bitterness. Total brew time is 1 to 2 minutes. Cleanup takes about 30 seconds.

The AeroPress works for travel, camping, the office, and home. It is lighter than any drip machine and produces a better cup than any pod brewer. For a full comparison of home brewing methods, read the Blackout Coffee brewing methods guide.

What You Need

You need an AeroPress brewer, a paper or metal filter, freshly ground coffee, a kettle, a scale, and a mug. A gooseneck kettle gives you better control over your pour. A digital scale removes guesswork from your ratio.

Blackout Premium Coffee is available whole bean, grind fresh right before brewing for the best results. For more on why grinding fresh matters, read Should You Be Grinding Your Coffee? on the Blackout blog.

AeroPress Ratio and Grind

The standard AeroPress ratio is 1 gram of coffee per 6 to 8 grams of water. A solid starting point is 17 grams of coffee to 220 grams of water. Adjust the ratio to taste once you dial in your grind.

The AeroPress works best with a medium-fine grind, similar to table salt. Finer grinds produce stronger, more concentrated results. Coarser grinds produce a lighter, cleaner cup.

Start with medium-fine and adjust based on how the cup tastes. If the cup is bitter, grind coarser or shorten your steep time. If the cup is weak or sour, grind finer or extend your steep time.

Water Temperature

Heat water to 200°F. If you do not have a thermometer, bring water to a boil and let it rest for 45 seconds. Brewing below 190°F produces a weak, under-extracted cup. Brewing above 205°F turns the cup bitter.

The Specialty Coffee Association sets 195°F to 205°F as the optimal brewing temperature range for all methods.

Step Instructions
1 Place a paper filter in the AeroPress cap. Rinse it with hot water over your mug. This removes paper taste and preheats your cup.
2 Assemble the AeroPress in standard position on top of your mug. Add your ground coffee and level the bed.
3 Start a timer. Pour water slowly over the grounds in a circular motion. Make sure all grounds are saturated.
4 Stir gently for 5 seconds.
5 Place the plunger on top. Do not press yet. Let the coffee steep for 60 to 90 seconds.
6 Press the plunger down slowly and steadily. Apply even pressure. The press should take 20 to 30 seconds. Stop when you hear a hiss.
7 Remove the AeroPress from your mug. Pop out the coffee puck over a trash bin. Rinse the AeroPress under running water.

The Inverted Method

The inverted method places the AeroPress upside down during steeping. No water drips through before you are ready to press. It gives you more control over steep time and produces a fuller extraction.

Flip the brewer onto your mug just before pressing. Many advanced home brewers prefer the inverted method for its consistency. Both methods produce great results once you get comfortable with the brewer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grind size is best for AeroPress coffee?

Medium-fine, similar to table salt. Adjust coarser if the cup is bitter, finer if it is weak.

How long should I steep AeroPress?

60 to 90 seconds is the standard range. Experiment in 15-second increments to find what works for your roast.

Can I use pre-ground coffee in an AeroPress?

Yes, though freshly ground whole bean coffee produces noticeably better results.

Do I need a scale to brew AeroPress coffee?

A scale helps you stay consistent. Start with 17 grams of coffee to 220 grams of water as your baseline.

Is AeroPress coffee the same as espresso?

No. AeroPress produces a strong, concentrated brew. It does not create the pressure or crema of a true espresso machine.
