A cafe mocha is espresso, chocolate, steamed milk, and whipped cream in one cup. It is based on the Italian moccaccino, a cappuccino with a touch of chocolate, made larger and richer. The full 16-ounce version uses a double espresso, chocolate syrup, frothed milk, and whipped cream on top.
Making a cafe mocha at home takes about 10 minutes and produces a better result than most prepared versions. You control the chocolate-to-espresso ratio and the quality of every ingredient.
Prep time: 5 minutes | Total time: 10 minutes | Servings: 1
What You Need
| Ingredient | Full Size (16 oz) | Half Size (8 oz) |
|---|---|---|
| Chocolate syrup | 2 teaspoons | 1 teaspoon |
| Espresso | Double shot (2 oz) | Single shot (1 oz) |
| Frothed milk | 12 oz | 6 oz |
| Whipped cream | To top | To top |
| Cup size | 16 oz, heavy | 8 oz |
How to Make It: 5 Steps
- Pour 2 teaspoons of chocolate syrup into a large, heavy 16-ounce cup.
- Add a freshly pulled double espresso shot (2 ounces). Use a standard double espresso pulled to 2 ounces with good crema.
- Pour 12 ounces of frothed milk into the cup on top of the espresso and chocolate. Do not wait long before pouring , the espresso crema fades quickly.
- Add whipped cream on top, then drizzle with a little more chocolate syrup or dust with cinnamon powder.
- For a nicer presentation, add a small piece of dark chocolate on top.
Tips and Variations
Make a half-size version
For a smaller 8-ounce version, use a single espresso shot and 6 ounces of frothed milk. Use less chocolate to keep the ratio balanced. It is a good starting point for dialing in the chocolate level before committing to a full cup.
Use real chocolate instead of syrup
Chocolate syrup is the standard approach but real chocolate and cocoa powder both work. Melt a small square of dark chocolate directly in the cup before adding espresso. Or mix 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder into a teaspoon of hot water, then add the espresso. Real chocolate produces a more complex, less sweet mocha.
Dial back the espresso if needed
If the drink comes out too strong, replace the double espresso shot with a single one. You lose some of the espresso-forward character, but the chocolate fills in the body. A medium roast or dark roast espresso works better than light roast in a mocha. The bolder flavor holds up against the chocolate and milk. Our Brewtal Awakening dark roast is built for this kind of preparation.
Make it iced
For an iced version, add the chocolate syrup to the bottom of a glass filled with ice. Pull the double espresso shot and pour it over the ice. Top with cold milk rather than frothed milk and stir to combine. Skip the whipped cream or add it after. See our espresso signature drinks guide for more coffee drink ideas. Frequently Asked Questions
What is a cafe mocha?
A cafe mocha is a coffee drink made from espresso, chocolate, steamed milk, and whipped cream. It is based on the Italian moccaccino, a cappuccino with chocolate, made larger and richer. The chocolate can be syrup, cocoa powder, or melted chocolate.
What is the difference between a mocha and a latte?
A latte is espresso and steamed milk. A cafe mocha adds chocolate to that base. The mocha is sweeter and richer than a latte. Both use espresso and steamed milk, but the mocha adds chocolate for a distinct sweeter character.
Do I need an espresso machine to make one at home?
No. A Moka pot or AeroPress produces a strong enough concentrated shot to work in a mocha. The result will not have espresso crema, but the coffee flavor holds up well against the chocolate and milk. A standard drip coffee is not strong enough and will produce a weak result.
How much caffeine is in a cafe mocha?
A 16-ounce cafe mocha made with a double espresso contains roughly 130 to 160 milligrams of caffeine. The chocolate adds a very small additional amount. The caffeine content depends on the espresso roast and extraction more than the chocolate.
What is the best chocolate for a cafe mocha?
Chocolate syrup is the easiest option and works well. For more depth, use unsweetened cocoa powder mixed into a paste with hot water. For the richest result, melt a small square of dark chocolate in the cup before pulling the espresso. The darker the chocolate, the more it complements a bold espresso.
Can I make a cafe mocha without milk?
Yes. Use oat milk, almond milk, or coconut milk instead of dairy. Oat milk froths well and has a neutral flavor that works in a cafe mocha. Coconut milk adds its own sweetness. Almond milk is thinner and does not froth as well but works in an iced version.
