A Realization over Outside Espresso

It’s been a long time since I’ve had coffee prepared anywhere except by me at my house. This morning, I had to make a long road trip to attend something for school and so I found myself away from all my mail-ordered beans and equipment.

Now I probably could’ve packed some, after all the Aeropress travels easy enough, but I decided I didn’t want to mess with finding a hot water source. So after an amazing meal, I had the chance to try some espresso at a great resturant that assured me that their espresso used only fresh locally roasted beans and was very good.

When they brought it to the table, it didn’t look like much. There wasn’t too much crema at all. The taste was like a standard black coffee. Nothing really noteworthy at all for the $2.50 price. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t bad by any means, but it was lacking compared to what I’ve gotten used to.

One of the major reasons, that I started making my own coffee is because I wanted to save money. My first attempts weren’t that great, I thought the coffee shop coffee was much better. They were just too expensive for every day so I kept trying, and as time went on I made better and better cups. Now I prefer mine over most of the coffee shop coffee I can get. I guess the lesson I learned is that when you zero in on what you like and are constantly practicing your skills eventually you become one of the best options for you.

I’m sure that there are a lot of people, some on this board, that can make a better tasting coffee than me. This is a hobby to me, for some of you it’s much more than that. Still, I learn more tips and tricks every day and can taste my improvement. It’s a fun ride isn’t it?
